I have already written a bit about
the best brush for your hair. After researching a bit more about the brush vs comb issue, I ended up with these tips for combing your hair:
- Try to avoid brushing wet hair, since it's weaker and will break much easier.
- It's a good idea to start by applying detangling lotion, or leave-in conditioner, serum, olive oil... whatever works best for you. This will make hair easier to detangle and less likely to break.
- Start by detangling with your fingers. Be gentle. Work from bottom up.
- If there is a nasty knot, apply hair conditioner on it. That should make it easier to untangle.
- After the finger detangling, use a wide-toothed comb on your hair.
- ALWAYS work from the bottom up. That means first combing out the ends of your hair, then moving a bit higher and combing out the last 10 cm, and then going still higher...
- After detangling with a comb, use a brush on your scalp and hair. It massages the scalp, cleans the hair, and distributes the oil from roots till the ends of the hair.
- When the hair is tangle free, you can style it with whatever comb or brush works best for you.
Always treat your hair like a fine, delicate fabric.
It always distresses me to see people with beautiful long hair aggressively trying to pull out the tangles with their comb. So, a wide-toothed comb is a must-have.
Most normal combs have jagged surfaces (like between the teeth) that shred the hair scales and damage the hair. Get a comb that is
seamless and is made of a hair-friendly material.
Most people need to use a comb as well as a brush, since
both work in different ways and fulfill different functions.
