  • Recipes for cider vinegar based toners

    Beautyineverything.com

One of the best toners ever is apple cider vinegar. It gives almost instant effects, it's cheap & easy to make and can be customised in a hundred ways to serve your skin type !

    Apple cider vinegar:

    • Restores the acidic balance of the skin,
    • Controls oiliness and acne: away with greasy shine !
    • Boosts circulation: the skin starts glowing !
    • Smoothes and softens skin
    • Minimises pores
    • Cleanses. Helps to deal with whiteheads and blackheads.
    • Deals with redness caused by breakouts

    What you need to know:

    * What kind of cider vinegar should you use ?
It's quite important that it must be organic ! This is vera very important ! Regular cider vinegar usually gives worse results.
Look for gunk floating at the bottom, that shows that the vinegar is unrefined and unfiltered.
You can also make your own vinegar: wash apples, don't peel, just cut into pieces. Put into a sterilised jar. Mix water with sugar (1 tsp sugar to 1 litre) and pour over apples until they are covered. Cover jar with a gauze, and keep in a warm place. After 4 weeks, pour through a sieve and pour into a bottle.

    * The smell:
Ah yes. It does smell a bit vinegary, although not strongly. If it bothers you, either add essential oils, or try lemon juice instead.

    * For which skin type is the cider vinegar toner ?
For all skin types. Drier and more sensitive skins should use a lower strength (see below). You can customise it to serve your specific skin type by adding essential oils.

    * Toner strength, aka vinegar to water ratio:
This depends on your skin type. Anything from 1:10 to 1:1 (vinegar to water) may be right for you. I suggest starting with a lower strength to avoid irritating the skin, and gradually work your way up. If you have problems with capillaries on the face, or have a dry or very sensitive skin, avoid high concentrations.

    * Why am I breaking out after this ?
Your skin is detoxing, the impurities are coming out. It should clear out within a few days.

    * It's not working !
If you do not see any effects in a few days, try a more concentrated solution.

    * My skin is all red and itchy !
I told you to start with a low concentration ! Add more water next time.

    * How long does this toner keep ?
Just vinegar with water & essential oils keeps forever. Anything with perishable ingredients such as green tea, lemon, vit-c, etc keeps up to 2 weeks in the fridge.
It's best to use sterilised containers made from dark glass.

Apple cider vinegar toner with essential oils

Essential oils not only hide the vinegary smell, they customise your toner to be more moisturising, cleansing or soothing -- whatever your skin needs ! Here is a list of essential oils and their properties. Don't forget to choose something that you like the smell of !
You can mix essential oils, but I don't recommend using more than 2 or 3 at a time.
    You will need:

    • Essential oil: make sure it is 100% pure and not diluted, and that it is an "essential oil", not a perfume or an essence.
    • Coffee filter: brown, not bleached white
    • Apple Cider Vinegar: Organic, unrefined, unfiltered.
    Instructions:
    • Heat 100ml water.
    • When hot, add 1 to 5 drops of essential oil. For your first attempt, better to add just a drop or two.
    • Shake well, pour through the coffee filter.
    • Cool, with a lid on.
